How time flies. It seems like it was only yesterday that your little one went from reciting the alphabet to gleefully reading a Ladybird Book.
As your six-year-old gears up to enter the next phase in life, here are a few things that you should know to make his or her transition from kindergarten to primary school as painless as possible.
P1 Registration Phases and Procedures
To get started, every parent should take note of the registration exercise period that runs from June to September every year. Register your child according to the phases that he or she is eligible for.
Registration Phase | Requirement |
---|---|
Phase 1 | Has a sibling studying in the school |
Phase 2A(1) | Parent is a former student/alumni member/member of the school |
Phase 2A(2) |
Parent/sibling has studied in the school, or parent is a staff member of the school |
Phase 2B | Parent is a parent volunteer and has contributed at least 40 hours of service to the school. Or is affiliated with the clan/organisation directly affiliated with the school, such as the Catholic church. |
Phase 2C | Eligible for Primary One in the following year but has not been registered in a primary school |
Phase 2C Supplementary | Not registered in primary school after Phase 2C |
Phase 3 | Not a Singapore citizen/Singapore permanent resident |
Top Tips for Parents
1. Register at a school that suits your child
We know you want your little one to enter the best schools, but do think about the kind of school that best suits your child, particularly as he will be spending the next six years of his life there. Help to make his or her learning journey enjoyable by considering these criteria when registering: distance from your home, facilities, co-curricular activities offered, secondary school affiliations, academic standing and reputation of the faculty.
2. Do your homework
Many schools offer open house days or scheduled tours. Contact the school directly and ask to view. Ask questions about the school’s values and the principal’s vision for the school, as well as practical considerations such as after-school care and bus routes. Ask to see the classrooms and take a look at the children’s work that is on display.
3. Have your paperwork ready
On registration day, ensure you have the correct documentation ready to go. At a minimum, you will need original copies of your child’s birth certificate, immunisation records and evidence of citizenship or permanent residence, plus the Singapore NRIC for both parents. Some phases will require additional documentation, for example phase 2b requires a parent’s baptism certificate.
